Frequently Asked Questions
How is this project best described to others?
Hinging on gifted coffees from one citizen to another, Coffee Stories is an altruistic storytelling project viewing the world through fellow coffee shop goers' narratives. "Give a coffee, unlock a story." (Want to know more about how it works and give a coffee to a stranger? Read the Give a Coffee section.)
What has served as inspiration for this movement?
Reviving an Italian tradition - caffè sospeso - a charitable act of donating a "suspended coffee" to a stranger, Coffee Stories is taking this practice to new heights as we get to know and understand our neighbors and fellow community via their lens of the world and their 'coffee stories.'
With each received coffee, our new coffee friends are encouraged to share their thoughts or creative ideas, e.g. s story, writing samples, photo, poem, drawing, or anything that speaks to them -- these collected stories will be published to coffeestories.co/stories.
Who are we?
We're community of coffee lovers and goodwill ambassadors, who view the opportunity to make a difference in someone's day a priority, as well as relish in learning about how others view the world around us. Join us in bringing Coffee Stories to your city and local coffee shop, and maybe you'll be the next to receive a coffee story!
Where did the idea for this nouveau coffee-telling project come from?
A coffee shop! In particular that moment when the caffeine permeates your mind and makes you ponder life questions and how we all relate to one another. The first Coffee Stories 'For: You' card was left for a stranger in Denver, Colorado in June 2015. Coffee is powerful, social, communal, and we believe provides an opportunity for humanity to get closer to each other.
Who is gifted these 'Coffee Stories coffees'?
Could be anyone! The university student cramming late at night, the mail(wo)man, the part-time massage therapist on their way to work, the 38 year old father of two on his lunch break from the nearby construction site, or YOU. Coffee has no biases, and these coffees are meant for everyone.

“Coffee is far more than a beverage. It is an invitation to life, disguised as a cup of warm liquid. It's a trumpet wakeup call or a gentle rousing hand on your shoulder ... Coffee is an experience, an offer, a rite of passage, a good excuse to get together." ― Nichole Johnson
